Sexual abuse and violence can be committed against anyone regardless of age, gender, religion, race, sexual orientation, culture and social status.
In recent years, there has been a spike in media reports of child sexual abuse providing some truly horrific reports of abuse committed against children over the internet and in gang related situations; including as Rotherham, Bradford and Huddersfield.
This is not the whole picture of sexual abuse.
The Office of National statistics have collated evidence from the Crime Survey for England and Wales for the year ending March 2017. There is estimated 12.1% of adults aged 16 to 59 who have experienced sexual assault, including attempt offences. This is equivalent to an estimated 4 million victims per year.
Sexual abuse can and does happen to anyone at any age and research shows that a larger proportion of adult survivors of sexual abuse choose to not report it, than those who do.
Sexual abuse is degrading, humiliating and self-sabotaging in it’s nature. This form of abuse creates confusion and distress which in many cases lasts a lifetime, disclosure can often re-traumatise.
