On 2 May 2018, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, ordered an independent review into NHS breast cancer screening following a discovery that up to 270 women may have had their lives shortened.
It has been discovered that the issue may have effected women who were waiting for their final screening test which they should be invited to between the ages of 68 and 71 and all as a result of an IT issue which happened in 2009 but was only discovered in January of this year when it was highlighted to the Department for Health and Social Care by Public Health England. All women between the ages of 50 and 70 should be invited automatically for screening every 3 years.
This is a positive step towards the NHS recognising failings and conceding liability in cases which have resulted in real harm to a patient and their life expectancy.
