Dementia Action Week is a national event led by the Alzheimer’s Society to encourage people to come together to take action to improve the lives of those affected by dementia. Dementia is the term given to a group of symptoms from certain diseases which affect the brain. Alzheimer’s disease being the most common cause of dementia.
The social care system is currently struggling to provide the required care and support to almost 1 million people living with dementia. The coronavirus has certainly added a further layer of difficulty and in so doing has highlighted the need for urgent reform and support in this area.
To put things into perspective, one out of three of us born in the UK today will go on to develop dementia during our lifetime. As such, this is arguably one of the greatest challenges facing our society and so has become the focus of this year’s Dementia Action Week.
Whilst dementia is not yet curable, the care system is. Until things change, a dementia diagnosis will continue to claim more than one life, as families facing dementia feel its destructive effects. With the right support people with dementia can live a good quality of life, doing what matters most to them for as long as possible. Sign the petition here.
