One of the many problems facing people with dementia is that most of us don't understand what living with dementia is like. Unless you have been there, experiencing it, caring for someone living with it, it is difficult to know what it is like, but that doesn't mean you can't learn more.
Sadly, dementia is very common and if it isn’t a part of our everyday lives, it is something we will doubtless come across from time to time. A good way to spread some much needed altruism and to learn more about dementia is to become a Dementia Friend. You couldn't imagine an easier way to do something that teaches you something, makes you feel good and above all, is genuinely helpful.
Becoming a Dementia Friend is something all of us can do. You simply need to learn a little bit about dementia and be prepared to put what you learn to good use. Anyone who is willing to be more patient with a stranger in public, make more of an effort to spend time with someone who is suffering, wear a badge or just pass on their knowledge to someone else can be a Dementia Friend.
Being a Dementia Friend encapsulates the phrase, a little goes a long way and even the smallest gestures can go a long way to improving the lives of a large and growing population.
Of course, it doesn’t need to stop there. Being a Dementia Friend can be the first step to becoming more involved in the area, maybe by volunteering or campaigning.
There are many solicitors at Ramsdens who regularly work with people living with dementia and they are all Dementia Friends. We strongly encourage you to join us.
You can sign up online in 5 minutes or for something more in depth you can attend the very helpful information sessions that are held all over the country to inspire people to become Dementia Friends.
As it’s Dementia Action Week why not take the opportunity to attend the information session in Mirfield on Friday 26th May.
