Today marks Human Rights Day and is observed every year on 10th December. It is the day the United Nations General Assembly, in 1948, adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This document declares the inalienable rights that every human being is entitled to, regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. This document is the most translated document across the globe and is available in more than 500 languages.
For this year’s campaign the theme is Equality and Article 1 of the UDHR – “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” Equality and non-discrimination are the core principles of human rights and an important message to share across the world. The slogan being used to raise awareness for Human Rights day is “All Human, All Equal”.
Equality is aligned with the United Nations 2030 Agenda, this will address and find solutions for deep-routed forms of discrimination that have affected those who are most vulnerable in society including LGBTI individuals, migrants, people with disabilities, indigenous people, among others.
Equality, inclusion and non-discrimination, a human rights based approach to development and education, is the best way to reduce inequalities and continue our path of campaigning and implementing solutions to equal treatment and opportunities for all in our modern day society.
