The tragedy continues in the review ordered by the government of Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust.
Patient safety concerns forced the health secretary to put the hospital trust into special measures. This Trust is no longer trusted to run itself and is now being overseen by NHS Improvement. It is reportedly the first time a Trust has been placed in this position without a recommendation from the care Quality commission first of all.
It is reported that there are now 215 families who have raised their concerns over the maternity care received with concerns over significant errors, deaths and injuries. The Trust have ensured the public that all cases will be thoroughly investigated so that lessons are learnt.
Strong external support is clearly needed to help the Trust get back on track and to ensure that care for its patients is back to a satisfactory standard in the shortest time possible. Those whose needs are serviced by the Trust will need reassurance that the care and services are moving in a positive direction.
We, of course, appreciate the NHS is under immense pressures through lack of funding, difficulty with staffing levels and the ever challenging demands of the service we expect to be provided with. It is, however, vitally important that the service delivered is of the right standard and action therefore must sometimes to be taken.
