Dignity Action Day #DAD2020 takes place this Saturday on 1st February. It is an annual opportunity for health and social care workers to uphold individuals’ rights to dignity.

The widely reported Manchester sex abuse scandal has revealed the extent of failures within the police and social services in the early 2000s. A report has found that authorities were aware of children suffering ‘the most profound abuse’, yet failed to protect them.

Last week it was reported that there are 20,000 more children in care in England than there were the last decade. This is an increase of 28%, meaning there are now 78,150 looked after children in 2020, 18,160 of them being subject to Child Protection Plans.

As Children in Need day approaches, it has been revealed that almost one in 50 unborn children are classified as ‘children in need’, a statistic which has trebled in the last eight years. Figures for the 2018-2019 period highlight that 7,360 children are considered as vulnerable prior to birth, which has increased from 2,630 in 2010-11.

The charity Age UK have recently reported that one in four victims who make a report of domestic abuse are over 60. In one year alone it was reported that 200,000 victims of domestic abuse were between 60 and 74 years old.

A recent BBC News investigation has found that 'looked-after' teenagers over the age of 16 are at risk of exploitation and abuse whilst residing in unregulated homes across England and Wales.
